This week I:
- Had great beers with Iain Montgomery at the start of the week and Nick Sherrard at the end of the week.
- In between, I went to my first ever classical music concert: Bach's Brandenburg Concertos by the Age of Enlightenment Orchestra. It strikes me that, given I had to do a ton of research to understand their significance, and they do have a great story, classical music could benefit from embracing 'lore' a lot more than it does. If they're going to make in inaccessible, make it inaccessible in a more rewarding way.
- This reminds me that The Art of the Score podcast is amazing. Film music is an easy way into classical, but this podcast makes explicit links by exploring the influences on the composers, and why they might be trying to evoke certain classical pieces at certain points.
- They also highlight a bunch of times Hans Zimmer has blatantly ripped off composers, which I keep meaning to write about in a post that's been percolating around 'when to be original'.
- I'll be keeping my focus on smart cities for the coming months, which is exciting. Iain and I were joking that focusing on cities is a great way to seem a specialist while remaining a generalist.
